Guest feedback“For us it was our first holiday on the African continent, but certainly not our last.

We had so many impressive encounters with the animals that at times we could hardly believe our luck.

But the encounters with the people also gave us many happy moments.”

Travel impressions

How do I plan an Africa safari?

Africa is an incredibly diverse continent, and the options for safari trips are numerous. Especially on a first Africa trip, it is easy to get lost in a wealth of information.

If you book your Africa holiday with Elefant-Tours as a specialist tour operator, you plan your trip with experienced professionals.

Our colleagues have travelled extensively in the individual countries and know the local conditions from first-hand experience: from driving distances to accommodation and activities. This way we can put together exactly the trip you dream of, tailored to you.

You give us the key details: number of travellers, travel period, budget, destination country and any other details that matter to you.

Based on this, we create a first trip proposal for you, which we refine together with you until your dream trip is settled. We book all services on the ground for you and also organise transfers to and from the airport.

We are also happy to book flights for you.

With us, an Africa safari is booked under German travel law. On the ground, the booked services are carried out by our own subsidiaries (Tanzania, Kenya, Namibia, South Africa and Botswana) as well as long-standing partners (Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe).

When is the best time to travel for a safari in Africa?

Africa's safari destinations offer different experiences all year round, which vary depending on the season and region.

In Africa, there is broadly a distinction between the rainy and dry seasons. In East Africa, the rainy season generally runs from mid-March to May and again in November. In southern Africa, it varies greatly from region to region.

During the rainy season, spotting animals is more difficult and the roads in the national parks are not always in the best condition. Nevertheless, this time brings green landscapes and blooming flora. Prices are also often lower, and there are fewer other tourists.

The dry season prevails in many regions of eastern and southern Africa from June to October. Because of the sparse vegetation, wildlife viewing is easier now. The animals are also easier to find, as they gather around waterholes. Road conditions for Africa safaris are better in the dry season, too. The dry season coincides with the holiday season in Europe. It pays to book early.

You can find detailed information on the individual destinations in our blog.

How much does a safari in Africa cost?

The price of an Africa safari is influenced by various factors.

First of all, the time of travel and the season play a decisive role: if you travel in the high season, typically the dry season, higher prices mostly apply.

The choice of accommodation, from luxury lodges to budget camps, also affects the cost.

Of course, the duration of the safari and the type of planned activities, such as guided tours or special wildlife-viewing experiences, above all influence the price.

The travel style can also influence the price of an Africa safari. On group tours you share the cost of guide and vehicle. On private trips, by contrast, you enjoy absolute flexibility in planning your trip.

Together with our Elefant-Tours travel experts, you can tailor your Africa trip to your budget.

Where can you go on the best safaris in Africa?

The best safaris in Africa await you in the southern and eastern parts of the continent. Here there is a tourism industry that has been established for many decades: accommodation, service, safari guides and infrastructure are geared to the needs of travellers.

Tanzania and Kenya are known for the Great Migration of the wildebeest and an overall very high density and diversity of wildlife, far beyond the well-known Serengeti and Masai Mara.

In South Africa, Kruger National Park and the private Sabi Sand Game Reserve fascinate.

Botswana is best known for the Okavango Delta and the elephant herds of Chobe National Park. Here you experience wildlife in idyllic watery landscapes.

Namibia impresses with Etosha National Park and the Namib Desert, ideal for wildlife viewing in a unique desert landscape.

Where on an Africa safari you will see not just many animals but the most animals overall, you can find out in our blog.

Where is the best place to go on a safari with children?

Families with children can go on safari in both East Africa and southern Africa. Safaris make for a very special holiday and stay in the memory for a long time.

When choosing your destination and planning your trip, you should bear a few points in mind:

On safari you often spend a lot of time in the vehicle, on game drives or driving to the next national park.

Stay several nights in one place to minimise driving times and allow more flexibility in how you spend your days.

Book lodges that have a swimming pool. After long stretches in the car, the children can let off steam here.

In East Africa, camps are often unfenced so as not to spoil the original character of the national parks. In southern Africa, more accommodation caters for families with younger children. The programme and activities are also more varied and not as focused on wildlife sightings as in East Africa.

We have taken a detailed look at whether Namibia or South Africa is better for families with children.

How long should a safari last?

The length of a safari depends on several factors.

Generally speaking, we recommend at least 5 days for a safari. In countries with very long driving distances, such as Namibia, you should allow at least 10 days for a safari.

In Kenya and Tanzania, many travellers extend their trip with a beach holiday after the safari. Climbing Kilimanjaro or Mt Kenya is also possible in combination with a safari.

If you want to see a lot in a short time, you can book a fly-in safari. On these fly-in safaris you fly from one national park to the next instead of covering the distance by car.

Rather than rushing from one place to the next, we generally recommend spending two nights in one place. This way you can also enjoy the small moments and the true magic of an Africa safari. In our blog you can read which other aspects influence the length of a safari.

What does a typical day on safari look like?

Basically, safari days differ depending on whether you are travelling or flying on to the next destination that day, or spending another night at your base.

As a rule, safari days start early in the morning. After a coffee and a few biscuits, you set off on your first game drive. In the cool morning hours the wildlife is at its most active. Around 10 o'clock there is a big breakfast or brunch.

Afterwards you can retreat and enjoy your accommodation. During the hot midday hours the animals also withdraw to shady spots. Wildlife viewing is more difficult now.

In the cooler afternoon there is another game drive or a special programme, such as a visit to a conservation project. The day may end with a romantic boat trip or a sundowner drive, followed by dinner and a cosy campfire.

You can also spend the whole day from morning to evening on a game drive and enjoy your lunch as a picnic along the way.

On short trips, frequent changes of location can become tiring; we therefore recommend spending two nights in the same place more often.
