When is the best time to travel for a Namibia safari?
In Namibia you can go on safari all year round, but the most popular time is the dry season from May to October.
During this time the animals gather at the waterholes, especially in Etosha National Park but also in Damaraland or in the private reserves. The vegetation is sparser and you can observe the animals well.
The seasons in Namibia are the reverse of those in the Northern Hemisphere. Here is a short overview of the months:
- May to August: cool mornings and evenings, mild temperatures during the day.
- September to October: It gets warmer, with excellent wildlife viewing.
But the green season from November to April with more rain also has its charm. The national parks flourish at this time, the animals are well fed and there are many young animals.
Even if they hide a little behind the blooming landscape, there is still plenty of wildlife to see.
For photographers this time is a dream, because the dust has settled, the landscape is green and many birds can be seen too. The Zambezi Region in particular is very beautiful at this time.
- November to December: The short rainy season begins and it slowly gets warmer.
- January to April: The main rainy season begins with thunderstorms in the afternoon.
The best time for a safari in Namibia therefore depends on what matters most to you.
Conclusion
If it is your first safari, we generally recommend the dry season from May to October, as this is when you are most likely to see a lot of wildlife.
As it is cooler at this time, other activities, such as the Erongo Mountains or the Namib Desert, can also be planned in well.
You can go on safari just as well in the green season from November to April. It is somewhat harder to find the wildlife, but there are fewer tourists around, which makes you feel even more connected to nature.

Is a Namibia safari holiday suitable for families with children?
Namibia is one of the most popular travel destinations in Africa for families with children. There are several reasons for this:
A really big advantage of Namibia is the variety of landscapes and activities that make many children's hearts beat faster, such as quad biking in the desert.
Namibia is known for being particularly child-friendly. Many lodges have special programmes and activities for children, which makes it very pleasant for families.
Namibia is regarded as a safe country for tourists to travel in, although of course you should use your common sense here (e.g. do not openly display valuables).
Many regions of Namibia, especially in the south of the country, are considered malaria-free. You can find detailed information on this in our blog Malaria-free destinations in Namibia.
Thanks to its good infrastructure, Namibia is one of the most popular countries for self-drive tours, which makes it a popular choice for a family holiday. If you book your Namibia safari with us, we plan your route so that you can take enough breaks along the way. After all, the daily stages can be quite long.
Namibia is also cheaper by comparison with other African countries, which suits many families. A safari holiday in Namibia is also a good way to strengthen family bonds and grow closer together.
We also offer special trips for families, such as our 12-day Namibia family trip. Here you travel together with other families and an experienced guide.
Are there German-speaking safaris in Namibia?
Yes, there are German-speaking safaris in Namibia, which makes it an excellent destination for tourists who prefer to communicate in German.
Because of the German colonial history, there are many expert guides who are either native speakers or speak fluent German and who look after German-speaking tourists in particular.

How much time do you need for a Namibia safari?
For a Namibia holiday with safari we recommend planning at least 10, ideally 13 days. That gives you enough time to visit Etosha National Park, Damaraland, the Namib Desert and a few more highlights.
In the end, of course, the length of the trip depends on the cost and on your personal preferences, and on what else you would like to experience besides the safari in Namibia – because the list of highlights is long.
The first factor to consider is the longer journey there and back. Many of our guests fly 10–14 hours each way, and you should factor this in when calculating the duration of your Namibia safari.
On top of that, Namibia is a very large country – almost two and a half times the size of Germany – and driving times are correspondingly longer.
In theory you can explore Etosha National Park and possibly the Namib Desert in five to seven days, but that is already the minimum for a safari holiday in Namibia.
For a Namibia safari we therefore recommend at least 10 to 13 days for a balanced experience. Especially if you want to see different places such as Etosha, Damaraland or the Zambezi Region (Caprivi Strip).
Our shortest guided group tour in Namibia lasts eleven days, and our most popular guided group tour lasts 13 days. This leaves enough time for wildlife viewing, cultural encounters, relaxation and adventure.
As a general rule: the more time you bring, the better. With a stay of two to three weeks you can take even more time to take in all the new experiences and visit as many of Namibia's must-see highlights as possible.
These include Etosha, Damaraland, the Skeleton Coast and the Zambezi Region. This leaves plenty of time for photography, activities such as walking safaris and cultural experiences.
We have summarised even more details on the ideal duration for a Namibia safari for you in our blog.
How many people are usually in a group on a safari in Namibia?

On our private tours we design your very personal dream safari together with you. You decide who accompanies you and which route you take – we take care of the perfect schedule.
Group tours are the more affordable alternative and good for those who like to meet new people on their trip.
Our group safaris have a fixed route and take place on fixed dates. The size of your group depends on the safari tour you book.
One example is our small-group tour "Fascination Namibia", a 13-day round trip with a group size of 2 to 7 people. Here you travel in our customised 4×4 off-road vehicle, window seat guaranteed.
We also offer small-group tours for up to 10 people, where you travel in comfortable Mercedes Sprinters
Another example is our group tour "Discover Namibia", an 11-day round trip with a group size of 4 to 16 people. A great way to experience Namibia up close on an adventure camping tour.
We are happy to help you find the right tour for you.

Can you do a Namibia safari as a self-driver in a rental car?
Yes – Namibia is one of the best countries in all of Africa for self-drivers and a popular destination for those who want to explore the country on their own.
A small part of Namibia's roads are good tarmac roads, the rest are unpaved gravel roads. Even the latter can be driven without four-wheel drive in the dry season.
Thanks to good road signage and good infrastructure, Namibia is also a suitable destination for first-time Africa travellers for tailor-made round trips by rental car.
Self-drive safaris in Namibia offer you freedom and independence and are perfect for those who do not want to compromise and want to focus exclusively on themselves and their fellow travellers.
Of course, this also means more responsibility and self-reliance and less relaxing and sitting back. But you are of course not entirely alone with the planning:
You plan your Namibia self-drive round trip together with our experienced and service-oriented travel experts.
With first-hand local knowledge and insider tips for real favourite spots, your Namibia self-drive (rental car) tour becomes a dream trip.

You can of course also reach us during your stay and contact us at any time if you have questions.

What kind of accommodation is there on safaris in Namibia?
Namibia has many different types of accommodation. The choice depends on your preferences and your budget, as the accommodation affects the cost of your Namibia safari holiday. From camping to rustic to luxurious, you will find pretty much everything here.
- Luxury safari lodges: If you are looking for something very special for your safari in Namibia, you will certainly find it here. Namibia scores with exclusive and beautiful lodges amid
incomparable nature. Private chalets, infinity pools, excellent cuisine and breathtaking views of waterholes or wide landscapes – you will not stop marvelling. - Tented camps: Anyone who says that sleeping in tents cannot be comfortable has never seen African tented camps. They are the perfect combination of comfort and closeness to nature. In the middle of the African wilderness and with well-equipped facilities, you can enjoy your safari holiday in Namibia to the full. Sleep in cosy beds, in large en-suite guest tents that are more like lodge rooms than a tent, and experience nature up close.
- Guest farms & lodges: The perfect option for anyone who wants to experience as much as possible of local life. On the family-run guest farms you get closer to Namibia and its people than almost anywhere else, enjoy home-cooked meals and get to know the culture even better.
- Adventure camping: This option offers an authentic and intense nature experience. You spend the night in comfortable two-person dome tents with comfortable mattresses, in the middle of the wilderness, under the sparkling African night sky. An experienced guide accompanies the group throughout the trip. Together with him, the camp is set up and taken down, meals are cooked and you relax around the campfire. This creates a strong sense of community and lets you experience Namibia's nature as close and unspoilt as rarely before. A real adventure for everyone who loves the original.
What meals are provided on safaris in Namibia?
On a safari in Namibia you can look forward to delicious cuisine that varies depending on the type of trip. As a rule, you start the day with a hearty breakfast and return to your accommodation in the evening for a tasty dinner.
However, this does not mean you have to go without lunch. Along the way you stop with your guide at selected places to fortify yourself with a tasty lunch.
The meals consist of a varied mix of African, European and other international cuisine. This variety provides exciting taste experiences.
Traditionally, meat plays a big role in Namibian cuisine, and meat lovers get their money's worth here. But more and more vegetarian and vegan options are also offered to meet different needs.
Please let us know about any special dietary requirements when you book, so that we can make sure your accommodation is prepared and offers suitable meals.
Drinks
In many accommodations, drinks such as water, tea, freshly squeezed juices and coffee are included. Alcoholic drinks are usually charged separately.
The lodges offer a well-stocked wine list, often with a selection of fine South African wines. Cocktails and refreshing drinks are also available to round off the day perfectly after an exciting safari.
