Honeymoons in Africa: The Best Destinations and Tips

Honeymoons in Africa – wild, romantic and unforgettable. Spectacular landscapes, fascinating wildlife encounters, vibrant cultures and experiences that will bring you even closer together as a couple await you.
In this blog we show you the most beautiful honeymoon destinations in Africa – plus practical tips for an unforgettable start to your shared adventure.
Why Africa is the perfect choice for your honeymoon
When I think of Africa, I think above all of the eastern and southern countries of the continent, of Kenya, Tanzania, Botswana, Namibia or South Africa.
The spectacular beauty of nature comes to mind: the majestic savannahs of the Serengeti and Maasai Mara, the dreamy beaches of Zanzibar, the unique Victoria Falls and the unreal waterways of the Okavango Delta, the vast panoramas of the Drakensberg, all the way to the dramatic desert landscapes of the Namib and Kalahari.

Adventurous couples also get their money's worth here and can, for example, climb Kilimanjaro together, travel the Okavango Delta by dugout canoe or fly over the Serengeti in a hot-air balloon.
In the luxurious lodges you'll experience warm hospitality and special offers for honeymooners, with private dinners under the starry sky, couples' massages in nature and romantic sunset drives. Secluded, stylish suites provide privacy and comfort.
A honeymoon in the African wilderness combines adventure, luxury and romance, for unforgettable moments in a special place. The perfect start to married life.
Romance in the wilderness – safari & luxury for couples
Imagine waking up in an elegant lodge surrounded by unspoilt nature. The first rays of sunlight shine across the savannah and reach your bedroom. A private breakfast follows on the veranda of your accommodation, where the African wilderness and the view of the wildlife create a breathtaking backdrop for romantic moments.
Refreshed, you set off on a guided game drive where you can experience the fantastic Big Five – lions, elephants, rhinos, leopards and buffalo – up close. What could be more exciting?
In the evening a romantic dinner under the starry sky awaits you, perhaps even by a campfire. Listen to the sounds of the night and enjoy the twinkling of the stars.

Safari and beach – the perfect combination for a honeymoon in Africa
How wonderful is the idea of combining a safari with a beach holiday: first you experience Africa's fascinating wildlife, for example in the Maasai Mara, the Serengeti, the Okavango Delta, Etosha National Park or Kruger National Park, and then you relax in a dreamy coastal paradise.
Imagine enjoying a cocktail by the sea at sunset and later letting the day fade away under a twinkling starry sky.
Kenya, Tanzania and South Africa in particular are perfectly suited to such combinations. Diani Beach, Zanzibar and Camps Bay are just examples among the many fantastic beaches in these countries.

The most beautiful honeymoon destinations in Africa
Africa is full of beautiful honeymoon destinations. There is something for every taste. In the following sections I can once again only offer you a few appetisers.
But don't worry: get in touch with my great colleagues at Elefant-Tours. They'll feed you more.
Together with you, exactly according to your honeymoon wishes, they create an individual travel plan and have plenty of special tips up their sleeves.

Namibia – endless expanses and spectacular landscapes
In the west, the Namib is probably the oldest desert in the world. In the east, the Kalahari is one of the most biodiverse semi-deserts on the globe.
You'll discover on a visit to Namibia that dryness, bare rock formations, endless sand and moon-like landscapes can create special romantic moments.
For help with planning your time, I recommend the blog: “Namibia: How long should you stay?”
Etosha National Park
In the desert state of Namibia, the almost 23,000 km2 Etosha National Park is an oasis of African wildlife. Of the “Big Five”, you'll find lions, leopards, rhinos and elephants here. Of the “Big Others” such as zebras, giraffes and so on, there are many more.
The heart of the park is the Etosha salt pan. This huge, vegetation-free expanse, which alone takes up around 4,760 km2 of the national park's area, is one of the most fascinating scenic sights in the safari world.
Here is a six-pack of good tips for a visit to Etosha National Park.
Sossusvlei and the Namib
The Namib Desert is one of Namibia's most fascinating attractions. This is where the sea of sand at Sossusvlei, protected as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site, is found. Its dunes are among the highest in the world. But the moon-like mountain formations in the background and its astonishing flora and fauna also make the region so extremely alluring.
If you're looking for honeymoon romance, you're in exactly the right place. The sunrise over the Naukluft Mountains dresses this unique natural landscape in a breathtaking dawn-red gown. If you then climb Dune 45 or later reach Deadvlei, you'll feel almost as if you were on another planet.

My tip: read the blog Sossusvlei in Namibia: Is it worth a visit? Definitely! if this region interests you.
Botswana – exclusive safaris and water worlds
Botswana is an El Dorado for wildlife and a paradise for honeymooners who love watery landscapes. Chobe National Park and the Okavango Delta have both. So take your time, treat yourselves to at least 3 nights in each region and enjoy your honeymoon.
The Okavango Delta
A honeymoon in the Okavango Delta is not only romantic but also exclusive. Large areas of the delta are a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site. To preserve its natural charm, there are so-called luxury camps with a wow factor that offer sensational views.
Mobile camps are also on offer. They follow the animals and you follow the camps. You spend the night in the wilderness under the stars in comfortable tents, are spoiled with campfire dinners and bush breakfasts and have endless wildlife around you. This is pure adventure romance.
In the rain-free months, when the rainfall from the Angolan highlands finally floods the delta, it transforms into a paradisiacal dry-season garden. Over more than 20,000 km2, a fairytale world of blooming water and islands emerges. There is nothing comparable in any other southern or eastern African country.
A water-world safari dream becomes reality – experience the delta by land in a 4x4 or on a bush walk on foot, enjoy it from the water in a mokoro (dugout canoe) or from the air in a light aircraft on a fly-in safari.

Here you'll find my blog A six-pack of good tips for a visit to the Okavango Delta in Botswana.
Chobe National Park
Romance is also celebrated in Chobe National Park's luxurious accommodation. Mostly you look out from your terrace onto the breathtaking Chobe River and its banks. Both in and out of the water, you see Africa's wildlife icons.
Boat trips into the sunset are, for me, the romantic highlight – past elephants and hippos, buffalo and crocodiles, along an avenue full of colourful waterbirds. The evening glow is reflected in the gentle river and a fire is kindled in me.

I have described when the best time to travel to Chobe National Park is in my blog.
South Africa – diversity between safari, wine and coast
If you spend your honeymoon in South Africa, you'll certainly find the widest range of possible activities and sights here compared with other countries.
For harmony during your honeymoon, I recommend following the “less is usually more” formula so you can really enjoy yourselves. For help with planning your time, take a look at this blog: “South Africa – how long should you stay?”
Kruger National Park & the Panorama Route
Kruger National Park is South Africa's most famous safari national park. Across almost 20,000 km2 you experience pure wilderness here, days of nothing but animals and everything a safari heart desires: the Big Five, but also hippos, crocodiles, hyenas, wild dogs, cheetahs, giraffes, zebras and the whole host of antelope. Plus birds in all colours and sizes.
When you fire up the barbecue here in the evening after a long day in the bush, or go out for a delicious meal at one of the restaurants by the river, it can hardly get more romantic.
West of Kruger National Park lies the Panorama Route with the Blyde River Canyon. It is South Africa's largest, greenest and most spectacular gorge. Don't miss the view into the depths through ‘God’s Window’. Experience ‘Bourke’s Luck Potholes’, where there is so much natural force in the water that landscapes are shaped into unique gorge formations. And enjoy the fantastic panorama over the canyon and the azure reservoir from the ‘Three Rondavels’ viewpoint.

Madikwe Game Reserve
While Kruger National Park still carries a certain malaria risk, Madikwe offers you a malaria-free safari experience. The Big Five game reserve lies on the border with Botswana and the Kalahari. Day visitors cannot enter here, so the number of guests is limited to the number of beds.
As a result, the animals feel little disturbed. It is therefore not unusual to come across shyer animals such as bat-eared fox, aardwolf, honey badger or African wild dogs. Over 350 bird species are the icing on the cake.
Acacia bushland, open woodland, wide grassland and a backdrop of rugged hills characterise the landscape, in which the luxurious lodgings are integrated almost naturally and offer the finest honeymoon experiences with moving scenic romance.
Cape Town & the Winelands
Cape Town and the Winelands offer a fabulous backdrop and are full of romantic attractions. Among them the views from Table Mountain and Lion's Head.
The metropolitan region's great beaches such as Camps Bay, Muizenberg, Hout Bay, Noordhoek and others are also irresistible. And the Cape of Good Hope should not be missed as a good omen for your future together.
The penguins in Simon's Town are heart-warming. If this topic interests you, I recommend reading Where can you find penguins in South Africa? Curious fellows: penguins in Simon's Town.

The various farms of the wine regions around Paarl, Robertson, Franschhoek and Stellenbosch also offer magnificent panoramas and culinary delights. You can read more about this in the blog South Africa: wine tours & gourmet tours at the Cape of culinary delights.
The Garden Route
The Garden Route is full of romance. It begins with the endless beach of Wilderness, leads to Sedgefield, where the tortoise sets the pace, and continues to the lagoon and the “Heads” of Knysna.
Beyond that, at Nature’s Valley, the sea meets paradise. And Storms River Mouth belongs here too, where you can enjoy a touch of scenic romance standing on the suspension bridges above the sea.

Many more places between Cape Town and Addo Elephant National Park want to be part of this route. Among them Hermanus, with its beautiful coastal walking trails and great opportunities for whale watching.
You can read more about these places in my blogs

Kenya – classic safari romance and relaxation on the coast
Anyone who knows the book or the film “Out of Africa” knows how romantic Kenya can be. A safari in Kenya is pure romance – meeting wild animals together at sunrise, driving hand in hand through unspoilt landscapes or floating above the savannah in a hot-air balloon and then dreaming under the starry sky by candlelight in the evening.
Kenya thus offers unforgettable trips that you can round off with a romantic beach holiday after your safari. Here you can expect white sandy beaches, coral reefs, delicious seafood and beach accommodation amid palm groves.
For help with planning your time, I recommend our blog on the length of stay for Kenya.
The Masai Mara & the Great Migration
The Masai Mara is one of the top highlights of Kenya's safari landscape and one of the most famous nature reserves in the world.
The Masai Mara is especially famous for its annual wildebeest migration, in which millions of wildebeest, zebras, Thomson's gazelles and others follow the rains, hoping for fresh, lush green grazing. Their route takes them clockwise from the pastures of the southern Serengeti in Tanzania to the plains of the Masai Mara and back again.
In doing so they cross the Mara River in daring fashion, trying to escape the hungry jaws of the crocodiles lurking there.
Private reserves and intimate lodges for undisturbed time together
If you long for a particularly exclusive experience, with personal attention and plenty of room for undisturbed time together, you'll find it in private conservation areas. Some lie directly on the Masai Mara, others such as Ol Pejeta in Laikipia. They combine luxury with dedicated species conservation.
Romance is found here not only in the sunset but also in the commitment to endangered animals – an experience that touches and connects.

Kenya's coast – relaxing on Kenya's dream beaches
Lined with coconut palms and powder-white sand, the Kenyan coast is a true paradise for water sports fans. Whether snorkelling, diving, kitesurfing or deep-sea fishing, an impressive variety of experiences on and under the water awaits you here.
The ambience is reminiscent of the Caribbean, with stylish beach hotels, cosy restaurants and inviting bars right by the sea. Everything is ready for pure relaxation and enjoyable time together. Dreamy sunrises and sunsets bring honeymoon magic through and through.
Tanzania – combining wilderness romance and tropical paradise
Tanzania is without question a honeymoon paradise. A fabulous wealth of wildlife in world-class conservation areas, beautiful nature and extraordinary cultural encounters distinguish the country. The dreamy white sandy beaches of the mainland or the Zanzibar Archipelago provide unforgettable honeymoon romance as the crowning finale.

The Serengeti & Ngorongoro Crater
The Serengeti is the epitome of the African animal kingdom worldwide. Its endless plains form the backdrop to the largest animal migration of our time unaffected by humans.
Year after year, over a million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of other hoofed animals travel a circular route about 1,000 km long. Their journey takes them through the treeless expanses and flat, spectacular grasslands of the Serengeti, past decorative rock islands (kopjes) and along scattered woodlands.
Their lives begin here during the calving season in January/February in the southern Serengeti. For some, however, it ends quite quickly while crossing the Mara River in July/August in the jaws of lurking crocodiles.
Together with Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti National Park forms a vast UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site. Both are among the best locations in the world for wildlife viewing in spectacular scenery. A honeymoon wilderness dream.
Ngorongoro Crater is the largest intact caldera in the world and one of the richest wildlife areas in Africa. Around 25,000 animals live in this natural arena all year round, including lions, hippos, elephants, buffalo and rare black rhinos. Lakes, swamps and grasslands create perfect conditions for wildlife. Framed by steep walls, the crater looks like a hidden paradise for wildlife viewing.

The south – seclusion and exclusivity
In the south of the country there are some huge game reserves such as Ruaha National Park & Nyerere National Park (formerly part of the Selous Game Reserve).
Nyerere National Park is the epitome of wilderness and seclusion. Here abundant wildlife teems along the Rufiji River or the lake landscape of the park. The unspoilt, wild nature of this magical place can be explored by boat trips, walks or classic game drives. Besides the usual suspects, African wild dogs and the Nyasa wildebeest, found only in East Africa, are among the great specialities here.
You can find out more about this wild place here: Nyerere National Park or Selous Game Reserve in Tanzania – is a visit worth it?
Ruaha National Park is Tanzania's largest national park and a real insider tip. It offers spectacular landscapes with baobab forests, rivers and gentle hills. Large herds of elephants, lions, leopards, kudus and over 570 bird species live here. Thanks to its seclusion, you experience pure wilderness and authentic wildlife viewing in almost untouched nature.
Both conservation areas are so large and uninhabited that you can experience your visit here in the greatest possible seclusion and exclusivity. Ideal for anyone seeking something special.
Zanzibar – turquoise water and white sandy beaches
Zanzibar delights with white sandy beaches, turquoise water and cultural richness. Stone Town's alleys, spice farms and dreamy hotels make the island the perfect honeymoon destination. But Zanzibar is not only the main island of Unguja, which is what most people mean when they say Zanzibar. Here are my top Zanzibar honeymoon islands:
- Pemba is greener, more unspoilt and quieter than Unguja. With dense mangroves, intact coral reefs and authentic villages – perfect for those seeking peace and nature lovers.
- Mnemba is exclusive and tiny – a private island paradise for luxury and time together. The surrounding reefs are among the best diving spots in East Africa. Ideal for an undisturbed honeymoon.
- Mafia is an insider tip for divers. Unspoilt beaches, the protected marine reserve and encounters with whale sharks make the island a special honeymoon destination.

Tips for an unforgettable honeymoon in Africa
To make your honeymoon in southern and eastern Africa truly unforgettable, I have put together a few tips for you.
Best time to travel for a honeymoon in Africa
Sun and bright blue skies by day, and a clear view of the honeymoon moon by night, suit a honeymoon in Africa. The best time for this is the low-rainfall seasons in eastern and southern Africa.
Eastern Africa
The best honeymoon times for Tanzania and Kenya are the dry-season months from June to October. The weather is lovely and it is not unbearably hot. The animals are generally easier to see, as the increasing drought makes the waterholes disappear and thins out the vegetation. The East African beaches are also at their most beautiful at this time.
Southern Africa
In southern Africa too, the best time to travel for honeymooners is in the dry season. Here it lies between May and October. The Okavango Delta, however, reaches its peak of water channels and island formation from June to September. Temperatures in these months are pleasantly cool.

What does a safari in Africa cost?
The cost of a honeymoon safari in Africa is very individual. Personal preferences and the style of travel play a role, as do decisions about the holiday country, length of trip and season (peak season, low season).
If you want to take it easy, get advice from a specialist tour operator like Elefant-Tours. With our subsidiaries on the ground at our side, we know our way around well and have already launched quite a few honeymoons.
With that said, the cost of a safari in Africa can be roughly estimated as follows:
- Budget safaris cost you approximately 150 to 300 euros per person per day, including basic accommodation, basic meals and shared game drives.
- Mid-range safaris are around 300 to 800 euros per person per day, with comfortable accommodation, good meals and guided tours.
- Luxury safaris start at around 800 euros and quickly rise to as much as 2,000 euros per person per day. They can easily go beyond that, too, including high-end lodges, gourmet dining and privately guided tours.
Two of our favourite trips for couples on honeymoon:
Luxury or adventure? How to find the perfect trip
The honeymoon is the perfect opportunity for a trip entirely to your wishes. If you seek the familiar, you'll find security in proven routes. If you dare something new, you'll discover the adventure of Africa.
What do you want?
- Relaxed luxury, wild adventures or even both?
- The challenge of driving yourselves or the laid-back enjoyment of a guided tour?
- A land safari or a fly-in safari, where you reach very remote areas, avoid technically challenging and time-consuming access roads and can admire impressions from the air?
- A classic lodge safari or a “back to basics” camping adventure with noticeably closer proximity to nature and wildlife?
