Our expert tip“Besides the sweat-inducing gorilla encounter, I have to admit that the chimpanzees impressed me at least as much. You might think they make a game of scaring tourists in the deepest jungle when the whole troop suddenly screams.”
Your Africa travel expert: Stephan Schuff
Guest feedback“It was our first experience of Africa, but certainly not our last. Wonderful people, lots of animals and simply a wonderful country.”

Day 1

Entebbe/Kampala – Kibale National Park

Driving distance approx. 300 km, pure driving time approx. 5–6 hours

Learn more ↓

Early in the morning, after breakfast and once your luggage is stowed in the vehicle, you start your exciting gorilla safari through Uganda. The first leg is the drive to Kibale National Park. On arrival, a short briefing by the rangers of the national park authority follows before the chimpanzee trekking. Afterwards the hike begins, with the aim of locating the free-living chimpanzees within the protected area. The actual walking time can vary greatly, depending on where the constantly roaming chimpanzee families currently are. As soon as you have located a group, you spend an hour with the animals and learn all sorts of interesting facts about the life and social behaviour of the primates from your ranger. The group can number up to 130 chimpanzees: several males and females as well as a multitude of babies. Watch the animals’ behaviour as they squabble over food, race up and down the trees with deafening screams or even dash past you at close range. After an hour you make your way back to the ranger station. On the way you try to spot other species of monkey that also live here, such as black-and-white colobus monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys, red-tailed monkeys or baboons. You stay at Papaya Lodge (mid-range) or Kibale Forest Camp (standard).

Day 3

Queen Elizabeth National Park

Driving distance: game drives

Learn more ↓
This morning is again at your free disposal for extensive game drives in the national park. Look for animals you have not yet spotted. You have lunch in the form of a packed lunch at a picnic site. In the afternoon, an approx. 2–3-hour boat safari on the Kazinga Channel, which connects Lake Edward and Lake George, is on the programme. Keep scanning the bank during your trip to see buffalo, hippos and other animals. With a little luck you may even spot the rarer member of the “Big Five” – the leopard. In the evening you return to your accommodation. BreakfastLunchDinner
Day 4

Queen Elizabeth National Park – Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Learn more ↓
In the morning you visit the southern part of the national park in search of the tree-climbing lions of the Ishasha region. The chances of observing this behaviour, rather atypical for lions, are particularly good here. Elephants, buffalo, waterbuck and many other animals can also be seen. Around midday you leave the park and drive on to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. You stay at Gorilla Safari Lodge (mid-range) or Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge (standard). BreakfastLunchDinner
Day 5

Gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Learn more ↓
Today is certainly the highlight of your gorilla safari in Uganda. You set out on the trail of the last free-living mountain gorillas in the world. The gorillas live scattered in several groups in Bwindi National Park. The various groups, which are used to humans, can be visited for one hour in mini-groups of no more than eight people. After a short briefing, you start the hike with a guide from the national park authority. Depending on where the animals are, it can take between one and six hours to find them. The animals move freely in the park, so no exact guarantee can be given for their whereabouts. An hour before you set off, a group of rangers is sent out to locate the gorillas and radio their exact position to your guide. The gorillas live together in family groups of up to 20 animals and roam the national park in constant search of food. Each group is led by a silverback, 2 metres tall and weighing up to 200 kg. Experience the gorillas and watch these unique animals going about their busy lives, which show almost human traits. You spend a total of one hour in the immediate vicinity of these “gentle giants”. This experience impresses even the most experienced Africa connoisseur. After your return to the national park office, you are transferred to the lodge. For those who do not wish to take part in gorilla trekking, this day is at your free disposal. Night at the same accommodation as the day before. BreakfastLunchDinner
Day 6

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest – Lake Mburo National Park

Learn more ↓

After a relaxed breakfast you set off towards Lake Mburo National Park, which you will reach in the afternoon. Large herds of zebra, impala, eland and other savannah animals live in the park. Bird lovers will also get their money’s worth here: so far around 300 different bird species have been counted. Among them is, for example, the somewhat quirky-looking shoebill, which you may spot with a bit of luck. Since mid-2012, lions have also been sighted in the park again. After check-in at today’s accommodation, you go on game drives within the park with your guide. You spend your last night on this eventful gorilla safari in Uganda at Kigambira Safari Lodge (mid-range) or Kigarama Wilderness Lodge (standard).
