Guided 4x4 Self-Drive Tours in Southern Africa

Off on an adventure: our guided 4×4 self-drive tours take you into the heart of the remote regions of southern Africa.

In your own 4x4 rental vehicle, you travel in a small-group convoy along off-road tracks and through restricted areas to remote wild camps and campsites.

There you spend the night in the rooftop tent of your vehicle and experience the wilderness up close under the starry sky.

Our local team, usually consisting of a guide and crew, drives ahead in a separate vehicle, gives you important tips over the radio and takes care of planning the route.

The route as well as the wild camps and campsites with sanitary facilities are fixed, but you set the pace along the way.

What is a guided 4×4 self-drive tour in Africa and how does it work?

A guided self-drive tour combines the freedom of your own 4×4 rental vehicle with the security of professional tour guidance.

In practice, this means: you are part of a small travel group but drive your own 4×4 vehicle; a guide and support team (depending on the itinerary) lead the small convoy of vehicles in a separate lead vehicle.

Before departure each day, the guide discusses the route and the day's highlights at the joint briefing, and is also on hand to help you at any time on the road by radio with questions or breakdowns.

This way you travel at your own pace and in a private atmosphere, but you stay at campsites with basic sanitary facilities or in the middle of the wilderness with a bucket shower and bush toilet – a real adventure!

What is the difference between a classic and a guided self-drive tour?

On a classic self-drive tour, you travel individually with friends and family and usually stay in fixed accommodation such as lodges and tented camps.

A guided 4×4 self-drive tour combines both: the adventure of driving yourself and the benefits of a guided tour in a small group.

You still sit at the wheel yourself of your own 4×4 vehicle, but you sleep in a rooftop tent in the wildest places in southern Africa.

You also enjoy the advantage of professional support from a guide and crew (depending on the itinerary).

Thanks to constant radio contact and your guide's extensive experience, you drive demanding routes yourself and spend the night in places that you can only reach with an escort.

You also don't have to worry about bureaucratic details such as permits and national park entry fees – your guide takes care of these for you and ensures your trip runs smoothly.

If you are unsure whether to take a classic or a guided 4WD self-drive tour in Africa, please contact our team for a detailed consultation.

In which regions do these trips take place?

Our guided 4WD self-drive tours take you to particularly remote regions of southern Africa – along stony off-road tracks, rugged beaches and species-rich wilderness areas.

You cross, for example, exclusive restricted areas as well as private concessions for which special permits are required. You experience fascinating places and unique natural backdrops, landscapes and wild animals.

The guided 4×4 self-drive tours take place exclusively in Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and South Africa; please refer to your itinerary for the exact regions and stops of your trip.

Where do you stay overnight on a guided off-road self-drive tour?

On our guided 4×4 self-drive tours in Africa, you spend the vast majority of the trip in the middle of nature: comfortable and protected in a fully equipped rooftop tent directly on your 4×4 vehicle.

The route takes you both to selected campsites with sanitary facilities and to unspoilt bush camps deep in the wilderness, where you stay self-sufficiently with simple, mobile sanitary solutions.

So that you can arrive relaxed after landing and wind down the trip comfortably at the end, the first and last night are each planned in a permanent, comfortable lodge or guesthouse.

The exact stops on your route vary depending on the destination and can be found in your individual itinerary.

Do I need any special prior knowledge, such as 4×4 driving experience or technical skills?

No, special 4×4 driving experience or in-depth technical knowledge are not essential for our guided self-drive tours.

Our tours are designed to be feasible and safe even for 4WD beginners.

So that you can start your adventure relaxed, we provide perfect preparation and support:

  • Thorough briefing: Before the trip starts, we and our local partner give you a detailed introduction to your vehicle. We show you exactly how four-wheel drive works, how to behave in different terrain (e.g. sand or gravel) and how to use the equipment.
  • Experienced tour guides at your side: Although you are at the wheel yourself, you are never alone. Our professional guides drive ahead in the lead vehicle. They know the routes well, give tips over the radio on the best line to take and support you on more difficult sections.
  • Round-the-clock technical support: Should you ever get a flat tyre or a minor technical problem, you don't need to be a mechanic. Our guides are technically very well trained and will change the tyre or carry out minor repairs for you on the spot.

What you should bring: a valid (international) driving licence, a normal level of concentration and stamina for the driving days and plenty of sense of adventure – we take care of the rest!

Who is part of a guided 4×4 self-drive tour?

As places on our guided self-drive tours are limited, you travel in a small travel group of a maximum of six vehicles. The group is made up as follows:

  • Our experienced tour guides:

Each trip is led by a professional, usually German-speaking guide or a guide with a crew (depending on the tour). Our local subsidiaries and our guides know the routes, the wildlife and the local conditions of southern Africa inside out. They drive ahead in the lead or support vehicle, handle the navigation and are on hand to advise you by radio and at all stops.

  • Like-minded travel enthusiasts:

You travel in a small group of like-minded people – usually made up of 4 to a maximum of 6 vehicles. The participants share your passion for southern Africa, nature and adventure. Lasting friendships often develop from shared experiences around the campfire or on the drives.

  • A well-practised support team (depending on the tour):

On certain tours, the group is also accompanied by a crew from our subsidiary. They take care of setting up camp, preparing meals in the background or are on hand for technical support (e.g. in the event of a flat tyre).

Good to know: Despite the group, you enjoy your privacy in your own 4×4 vehicle. You set the pace on the road yourself and are closely connected to the guide and the other vehicles by radio at all times.

Can I also book these trips as private tours instead of joining the group tour?

Yes, this is generally possible. For the 2026 and 2027 seasons, private group tours can be booked on request and subject to availability on the dates given.

From the 2028 season we offer you full flexibility: from then on, our 4×4 self-drive tours in Africa can also be booked outside the regular departure dates.

Our team will be happy to advise you.
