When is the best time to travel for group tours in Tanzania?

The best time to travel for a safari group tour in Tanzania varies depending on the experience you want – whether the Great Migration, wildlife viewing or simply a quieter safari holiday without large crowds.

For many travellers, the dry season from June to October is the ideal time to travel, when wildlife is particularly easy to see in Tanzania's national parks and game reserves. The reduced vegetation and the concentration of animals at a few water sources offer excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing.

In contrast to the long rainy season from March to May, the national parks are also more accessible during the dry season, without the risk of flooding or impassable roads.

Another highlight is the short dry season from January to February, which follows the short rainy season (November to December). At this time there are fewer tourists, which makes the safari quieter and more personal. Because of the lusher vegetation and the many water holes after the first rains, however, the effects of the long dry season remain limited.

A special experience is the Great Migration of wildebeest, zebras and antelopes, which can be observed in the Serengeti all year round. January and February are ideal for experiencing the calving season in the south-eastern Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

If you want to see the dramatic river crossings of wildebeest and zebras at the Mara River, you should travel between June and September.

Overall, the dry season offers the best conditions for a safari. However, if you prefer the green landscape and fewer tourists, the rainy season also has its charm.

How much time do you need for a Tanzania round trip?

The length of a Tanzania round trip depends on your interests, but usually lasts between 5 and 14 days. Tanzania is known for its exceptional wildlife, breathtaking mountains and the tropical islands in the Indian Ocean.

If you want to discover more facets of Tanzania, you should plan 14 to 21 days.

Here are some of the most popular activities and sights, with time guidelines for planning your round trip:

Safari in Tanzania: unforgettable wildlife experiences

A safari is the highlight of any Tanzania round trip. If you only have little time, the 5-day mini-group tour Fascination Tanzania will already satisfy you.

It leads to Tarangire National Park with its imposing elephant herds, the Ngorongoro Crater, known for its breathtakingly diverse wildlife, and Serengeti National Park, famous for the Great Migration of millions of wildebeest and zebras.

Trekking Kilimanjaro: Africa's highest peak

For many travellers, Kilimanjaro is the ultimate dream. An 8-day small-group tour such as our Kilimanjaro Trekking: Machame Route offers the chance to climb Africa's highest mountain while enjoying the spectacular scenery – challenging, but an incredibly rewarding experience.

Beach holiday in Zanzibar: relaxation after the safari

The Zanzibar archipelago is the most popular destination for a beach holiday in Tanzania. After an exciting safari or trekking tour, you can recover on Zanzibar's dream beaches.

The island is ideal for a stay of 3 to 5 days to relax on dream beaches, stroll through historic Stone Town, or go snorkelling and diving.

Can you combine a Tanzania safari with Kenya?

Yes, a safari in Tanzania can be combined excellently with one in Kenya to experience the best of two worlds! Both countries offer some of Africa's best-known safari destinations, and their national parks and reserves are relatively close to each other.

Here are some options for how you could plan a safari in both countries:

Serengeti (Tanzania) & Masai Mara (Kenya)

  • The Serengeti in Tanzania and the Masai Mara in Kenya are two of the best-known national parks and together form a huge ecosystem.
  • Both are home to the famous Great Migration of wildebeest, which move from the Serengeti to the Masai Mara and back every year.

Arusha (Tanzania) & Nairobi (Kenya)

Arusha in Tanzania and Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, are the start or end point of the safari group tour.

Along the way, with our Tanzania & Kenya Highlights, for example, you can visit Tarangire National Park, the Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Park in Tanzania as well as the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya.

With our Best of Tanzania & Kenya – East Africa Safari, you also visit Amboseli National Park in Kenya.

Visas and entry

  • Most travellers need a visa for both countries. An East Africa Tourist Visa allows you to travel to Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda without applying for a separate visa for each country.

Flights and land transport

  • There are daily flights between many major cities and national parks in Kenya and Tanzania (e.g. Nairobi – Arusha, Nairobi – Serengeti, etc.).
  • There are also good road connections overland.
How many participants do Tanzania group tours have?

Depending on the tour and travel style, the group size on Tanzania group tours varies. At Elefant-Tours we offer various options, always with your safety, your comfort and an intensive nature experience in mind.

Most of our Tanzania safaris are mini-group tours with a maximum of 7 participants.

On our Tanzania safari mini-group tours, every guest gets their own window seat in the Land Cruiser – ideal for wildlife viewing and photography. The reduced group size also guarantees more flexibility and a more personal safari experience.

An exception is our Africa Overland tour as a group tour with 4–16 people. Here you travel in a so-called overland truck.

On our trekking tours into Tanzania's mountains, we offer small-group tours with no more than 10 participants.

On the Tanzania trekking small-group tours, an entire team of mountain guides, cooks and porters ensures maximum care and relief for our trekking guests, so that they can concentrate fully on the climb and enjoy the spectacular landscapes.

Small groups foster a family atmosphere and allow participants to get to know each other better and share experiences. At the same time, participants feel more like part of nature than travelling in an anonymous tour group. This makes for an intensive and authentic experience.

It also allows the safari guide or trekking guide to respond to individual wishes and questions, which makes the travellers' experience even more unique.

Africa trips are characterised by impressive experiences, deep encounters and a real sense of adventure. Our experienced guides ensure that you can enjoy these special moments to the full, while we take care of all the organisation in the background.

This is how you discover your individual Africa – safely, expertly looked after and authentic.

What kind of vehicle will I travel in on a group tour in Tanzania?

On our Tanzania safaris in mini-groups of up to 7 participants, you travel in special Land Cruisers built for the demanding terrain of the African wilderness.

These robust vehicles offer a safe and comfortable ride on unpaved roads and remote routes. Thanks to four-wheel drive, high ground clearance and a sturdy chassis, the vehicles easily handle difficult terrain such as sand, mud or uneven tracks that would be impassable for a normal vehicle.

Our Land Cruisers are fitted with a raisable pop-up roof, so you can stand up in the vehicle and enjoy a breathtaking 360° panoramic view – with an unobstructed view of the wildlife.

Inside, the vehicles offer comfortable window seats with a central aisle, at the end of which there is a fridge to keep your drinks and medication cool.

Every vehicle is also equipped with charging stations so that you can conveniently charge your electronic devices while on the move.

The vehicles are driven by a professional guide who is familiar with local conditions and gives guests exciting information about the flora, fauna and nature of the respective area.

On the group tours with up to 16 participants, you travel in so-called overland trucks. These vehicles are specially designed for long distances and varying road conditions in East Africa.

They offer generous space, large windows for an optimal view of the landscape and sufficient storage space for luggage and camping equipment. Thanks to their robust construction, overland trucks guarantee a safe and comfortable journey even on remote routes.

Our safaris combine adventure with comfort and are the perfect experience for anyone who wants to experience wild Africa up close.

What travel styles are there apart from group tours in Tanzania?

Apart from group tours, there are various other travel styles in Tanzania that let you discover the country in an individual or tailor-made way. Here are some of the most popular options:

Private trips

Private trips offer a particularly high degree of individuality. You can be inspired by our group tours and, together with our experienced travel experts, develop your very own personal itinerary from them.

The itinerary, daily rhythm and accommodation are fully tailored to your wishes and needs.

You travel with a private guide and in an exclusive vehicle, which allows maximum flexibility and a high level of comfort. Your advantage: personal care, plenty of freedom and a safari experience that is shaped entirely according to your ideas.

Fly-in safaris

Fly-in safaris make it possible to travel quickly and comfortably between different national parks and reserves without having to endure long drives.

These trips offer breathtaking views of the landscape and combine air travel with exclusive safaris. Your advantage: time saved and spectacular views from the air.

Beach holiday

With this travel style, you either head straight to the beach or you combine safari experiences inland with relaxation and recovery on Tanzania's dream beaches, especially on Zanzibar.

Combination trips offer the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation. Your advantage: versatility through safari and beach holiday in one package.

Contact our travel experts for individual advice and planning of a private trip, a fly-in safari or a beach holiday in Tanzania!

We deliberately do not offer self-drive tours in Tanzania, because conditions in this sector are still not customer-friendly enough and often bring travellers more trouble than pleasure.

How much does a guided group tour in Tanzania cost?

The cost of a guided group tour in Tanzania can vary depending on the travel style, duration, season and your own interests.

More affordable options, such as our 5-day Fascination Tanzania trip, start at approx. €1,770, while more luxurious trips, such as our 13-day Best of Tanzania & Kenya – East Africa Safari, cost around €5,400.

The price of a Tanzania group tour is significantly influenced by the type of accommodation. Comfortable lodges or tented camps are generally more expensive than camping safaris, but offer a higher level of comfort.

The group size also plays a role: small-group tours are often somewhat more expensive than larger groups of up to 16 participants.

Tanzania is a popular destination all year round, although prices vary depending on the season. In high season, demand rises, which leads to higher prices.

However, if you travel in the low season, you can benefit from cheaper offers and also have the chance to experience the wildlife, the mountains or the beach resorts at a quieter time with fewer tourists.

The prices for Tanzania group tours include all accommodation, numerous game drives, national park fees and the company of an experienced tour leader. Most meals are also often included.

International flights and optional activities such as private game drives, boat trips, hot-air balloon safaris or other extras are generally not included and must be booked separately.

Contact our travel experts to find out more about the best group tours to Tanzania and the associated prices.

Are group tours in Tanzania suitable for families with children?

Yes, group tours in Tanzania can also be suitable for families with children, although travelling in a group requires a certain level of travel experience and maturity from the children.

Most lodges in Tanzania are not fenced and wild animals can move freely here. Parents should therefore not leave their children unattended.

Some lodges and camps in Tanzania have minimum age restrictions. Age restrictions can also make it harder for children to take part in certain activities.

In addition, the pace of a group tour follows a fixed itinerary, which can be challenging for younger children who find longer drives tiring.

In general, we recommend a private round trip for families with younger children, for which we can offer family-friendly accommodation, child-friendly activities and comfortable transport options.

The guide can also adapt entirely to your needs and those of your children. This way you travel through the country in a more relaxed and flexible manner.

Your private trip can also be based on the programme of a group tour that particularly appeals to you. We can plan additional breaks or stopovers so that the days are more pleasant for your children and less tiring for you as parents.

Are there German-speaking Tanzania group tours?

Yes! We offer no fewer than three small-group round trips in Tanzania with German-speaking departures:

– the 5-day Fascination Tanzania
– the 7-day Best of Tanzania Safari: Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater & more and
– the 7-day Tanzania – The Wild Side (Camping Safari)

All these mini-group safaris are tailored to up to 7 participants and all have an eventful programme with African wildlife as the highlight.

You visit great sights in various Tanzanian game reserves, including Tarangire National Park, the Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Park.

On the various tours you can sit back and relax, enjoy the view from your window seat and listen to the German-language explanations.

These mini-group safaris are led by highly qualified and experienced German-speaking guides who are familiar with both German and Tanzanian culture.

They gladly share their knowledge about the country and its people, culture, nature and wildlife. Their trained eye also helps you spot animals where many travellers see only a bush.

As we offer the same mini-group safaris predominantly in English, please contact us to confirm the German-language group tours in Tanzania.
