When is the best time for a hiking tour in South Africa?

The best time to travel for a hiking tour in South Africa is usually in the shoulder months, as climate and conditions vary greatly. For optimal planning you should consider both the season and the region.

In general, March to May and September to October are considered ideal. In these periods you benefit from mild temperatures, more stable weather and good visibility – perfect conditions for longer hikes.

Regional recommendations at a glance:

  • Drakensberg & Panorama Route: April to May and September to October offer pleasant temperatures, with April also bringing full rivers and powerful waterfalls (Tugela Falls). From November to March/April thunderstorms and rain are likely. From July to August it is mostly dry and sunny, but also very cool at night.
  • Cape region around Cape Town & Cederberg: September/October to April is optimal, September because of the wildflower season on the West Coast and the whale season (best time: August to October) in Walker Bay near Hermanus. From October onwards it is generally mostly dry and sunny there.
How many participants are there on a hiking tour in South Africa?

The group size on a hiking tour in South Africa varies depending on the travel style and comfort level. Elefant-Tours offers hiking tours in South Africa as tailor-made trips and as group tours.

On tailor-made trips, such as our 11-day South Africa hiking tour: mountains & wildlife, you as the guest decide the number of your fellow travellers – partner, friends, family, club members, work colleagues or alone. We support you with the planning and organise accommodation, vehicle, transfers and, on request, a guide for you.

We limit our guided 14-day group tour Hiking in South Africa, Eswatini & more to a maximum of 12 participants. We deliberately keep our hiking tours small in order to create a personal and familiar group atmosphere. At the same time, smaller groups allow more intense experiences of nature and more flexibility in designing the tours.

How much does a hiking holiday in South Africa cost?

The cost of a hiking holiday in South Africa varies depending on comfort level, trip length and the chosen travel style.

Our tailor-made trips start from around €190 per person per day – depending on group size. Guided group tours are possible from around €175 per person per day and offer attractive value for money.

Not included in the price are international and domestic flights, visas, drinks and meals not listed. Optional activities, tips, personal expenses and private travel insurance must also be budgeted for separately.

Where do I stay during my trip?

The accommodation on a hiking tour in South Africa is as varied as the itinerary itself. You will often stay in comfortable lodges and charming guesthouses that offer a pleasant atmosphere and personal service – ideal for smaller groups, too.

For a more immersive nature experience, tented and safari camps are available, which are often rustic yet comfortable and allow wildlife viewing.

In remote regions such as the Drakensberg, simple huts or mountain huts await you, designed specially for hikers and allowing you to spend the night in the midst of nature.

If you are looking for more comfort, you will find ideal retreats with extensive service in hotels and resorts – for example in Cape Town or near Kruger National Park – especially after demanding hiking stages.

What are the meals like on a hiking tour in South Africa?

Depending on the travel style, a varied mix of regional specialities and international dishes awaits you in South Africa. The meals are balanced, practical and provide the energy you need for active days in nature.

Whether in lodges, camps or on the road – you will be very well looked after. Fresh ingredients and local influences create authentic taste experiences. In the itinerary of the trip you have chosen, you will find more detailed information on your meals.

We are happy to take individual diets into account such as vegetarian or vegan, as well as allergies. Please let us know of any special requests in advance so that we can prepare everything optimally.

How many hours a day do you hike?

The length of the daily hikes can vary greatly, depending on the route, level of difficulty and type of trip.

On our group tours the daily hiking time is usually between two and six hours. You can find detailed information on the individual stages in the itinerary.

Our private tours offer you even more flexibility: all programme items and hiking stages can be adapted individually to your personal wishes and your pace.

The current suggested tour includes hikes of two to seven hours a day. As this is a private trip, we are guided entirely by you and your fellow travellers.

Our travel experts will be happy to advise you so that your hiking tour through South Africa is shaped entirely to your wishes.

Do you see wild animals when trekking in South Africa?

If you definitely want to see wildlife, it is best to book a special walking safari. Guided bush walks like these are offered, for example, in Kruger National Park and in various private game reserves.

Together with experienced rangers you explore the animals' habitat on foot. It is not only about possible sightings, but also about tracks, plants and the many small details that are easily overlooked on a game drive.

On classic trekking in South Africa, by contrast, the landscapes are the main focus. In the Drakensberg, on the Wild Coast or along the Garden Route, impressive mountain worlds, ancient forests, remote coasts and wide beaches await you. You may encounter wildlife along the way, but such sightings are rather by chance and by no means guaranteed.

Our trekking tours combine hiking with selected safari experiences. You have the best chances of seeing elephants, giraffes, hippos and other larger wildlife during the game drives planned in the National Parks and game reserves. When hiking itself, the appeal lies instead in directly experiencing the landscape, its plant life and South Africa's diverse birdlife.

Can I combine a hiking tour with other active holiday activities in South Africa?

A hiking tour in South Africa can be combined superbly with further active and nature experiences. The country offers an exceptional variety of landscapes and activities that make your trip even more varied.

Particularly popular is the combination of trekking and safari, for example in Kruger National Park or Addo Elephant National Park, where hikes can be ideally combined with classic game drives.

Mountain lovers also get their money's worth: the Drakensberg and the region around Table Mountain offer impressive trekking routes, challenging climbing tours and spectacular views.

Those who seek the water will find ideal conditions for kayaking or rafting tours on rivers such as the Orange River. Along the Garden Route and in places such as Jeffreys Bay or Muizenberg, a hiking tour can also be wonderfully combined with surfing.

South Africa also delights with unique nature experiences such as whale watching on the coast near Hermanus, often straight from picturesque hiking trails. Cultural and culinary highlights, too, for example in the wine region around Stellenbosch or on a visit to Robben Island, can be integrated superbly into a trip.

The result is a varied active holiday that combines nature, adventure, wildlife and culture in a special way.
